Faisalabad (Zafar Chishti, Bureau Chief Punjab Pakistan): The Rs 22 billion Faisalabad Water Treatment Project is expected to be completed by June 2027, bringing a major increase in clean drinking water supplies for the city and surrounding rural areas.
The surface water treatment plant is being developed as a joint initiative of the Punjab Government and the French Development Agency (AFD). Once completed, the project will add around 30 million gallons of water per day (MGD) to the WASA Faisalabad system.
Officials said the project will help provide clean drinking water to more than 600,000 people in rural areas, addressing growing demand for safe and reliable water supplies.
Faisalabad Water Treatment Project Reviewed
Commissioner Faisalabad Dr. Imran Hamid Sheikh visited the project site at Awagat and reviewed the ongoing pipeline-laying work. During the visit, Managing Director WASA Faisalabad Saqib Raza and representatives of the French Development Agency briefed the commissioner on the latest progress.
Saqib Raza said the project represents one of the largest investments in Faisalabad’s water supply infrastructure. He described the initiative as part of the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to improve public services and provide better facilities to citizens.
The WASA managing director said the new treatment plant would increase the city’s water supply capacity by approximately 30 percent after completion. He added that construction work is progressing under the supervision of Chinese engineers and technical experts.
According to the WASA chief, the work being carried out at the project sites is satisfactory and remains focused on completing the infrastructure within the planned timeline.
Clean Drinking Water for Rural Population
Commissioner Dr. Imran Hamid Sheikh expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Faisalabad Water Treatment Project and termed the initiative a major and revolutionary project for public welfare.
He said the treatment plant would play an important role in improving access to clean drinking water, particularly for populations living in rural areas. The project is expected to strengthen the existing water supply system while helping meet the increasing demand for potable water.
The commissioner also visited the project site at Makuana, where he reviewed ongoing development activities and received further briefings from WASA officials.
Earlier, Commissioner Faisalabad visited the Water Treatment Plant at Jhal Khanuana, which was established with the cooperation of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
WASA Managing Director Saqib Raza informed the commissioner that the Jhal Khanuana facility is supplying 5 million gallons of drinking water per day and benefiting more than 200,000 people.
The Jhal Khanuana project has already been completed and formally handed over to WASA Faisalabad for operation and management.
The commissioner reviewed the facility and was briefed about its operational capacity and contribution to the city’s drinking water supply.
The Rs 22 billion Faisalabad Water Treatment Project is expected to significantly strengthen Faisalabad’s water infrastructure. The addition of 30 million gallons of treated water every day will increase the availability of clean drinking water and reduce pressure on the existing WASA supply network.
With completion scheduled for June 2027, the project is being closely monitored by the relevant authorities. Officials have emphasized that the initiative will benefit hundreds of thousands of residents and support the long-term improvement of Faisalabad’s water supply system.
The project reflects growing efforts to expand access to safe drinking water and modernize essential public infrastructure in Faisalabad and its surrounding rural communities.
